Life sentence for human trafficking mastermind

News on Modern Day Slavery

Song Ja Cha, 71, the mastermind of human trafficking conspiracy at the Blue House brothel, will spend the rest of her life in federal prison.

Cha was sentenced this morning.

Cha’s two co-defendants — Saknin Weria and Freda Eseun — will not go to prison. They were sentenced to probation.

U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson said Cha’s crimes were “not far removed from slavery.”

“The defendant essentially owned the bodies and minds of these young girls,” the judge said.

Cha was convicted in 2011 of forcing women to be prostitutes. One of the victims, a 16-year-old girl, testified in the trial.
